Milton is removing the seasonal bike lanes on Bergamot Avenue to allow year-round parking on one side
Milton Council directed staff in June to remove the exclusive bike lanes on Bergamot Avenue between Tremaine Road and Savoline Boulevard, and in July passed a by-law that deletes the lanes and bans parking on the north side only.
The details
What Council decided
On June 22, 2026, Milton Council directed staff to remove the exclusive-use bicycle lanes on Bergamot Avenue and to permit on-street parking on one side of the street year-round, according to the meeting's minutes. The resolution, which began as a notice of motion introduced on May 11, also directed staff to bring forward the necessary changes to the Town's traffic and parking by-law and to keep enforcing the Town's standard parking rules there.
The motion says the lanes were installed to provide a future east-west cycling connection to the Milton Education Village, but that the development needed to support that cycling infrastructure will take several years. As an interim measure, Council had previously directed a seasonal approach, closing the bike lanes in winter so residents could park on the street and reinstating them in spring and summer. The motion says the seasonal restrictions have continued to create confusion and constraint for residents, and that Savoline Boulevard and Britannia Road already provide a continuous east-west cycling connection from Tremaine Road to the Milton Education Village.
What the by-law changes
Council passed the implementing amendment, By-law 070-2026, on July 13, 2026, among the by-laws approved that evening according to the minutes. It takes effect once the appropriate signs are erected and on display.
- Deleted (were on both sides, April 15 to November 15)
- Deleted (both sides, April 15 to November 15)
- Added on the north side
- Five-hour maximum, no parking 2 a.m. to 6 a.m., and snow-clearing restrictions, per the June 22 resolution
The same by-law makes several other changes elsewhere in Milton. It removes No. 14 Side Road between Appleby Line and Tremaine Road from the Town's list of through highways and adds stop signs on all four approaches at Bell School Line and 14 Side Road, and it deletes the year-round heavy-truck prohibitions on Fifth Line from Britannia Road to its north limit and on Main Street East between James Snow Parkway and Fifth Line.
