New to Milton: a moving-in checklist

Before you move

Milton Hydro asks for at least 48 business hours' notice.

• Open an electricity account with Milton Hydro by phone at (905) 876-4611 or with its online Application for Service, at least 48 business hours before you move in. If the account is not set up before the move-in date, service is disconnected and a reconnection charge may apply.

• Start natural gas service by submitting your move online to Enbridge Gas, with your new address and your move-in and move-out dates. Expect a one-time New Account Charge on your first bill.

• Know that Halton Region bills water and wastewater through your local hydro provider, on the same bill and account. If you are buying, the seller should request the final water meter reading and transfer information, or unpaid charges and compliance issues pass to the buyer.

In your first weeks

• Enter your address in Halton Region's online waste collection schedule to find your garbage, Green Cart, recycling, yard waste and bulk collection days, and sign up for free reminders.

• Find your ward on the Town's Milton Ward Map. In a municipal election, the candidates you can vote for are based on the ward you live in, own property in or rent property in.

• Register your children for school. With the Halton District School Board, find your home school with its Find My Local School tool, then register in person at that school or pre-register online, and bring proof of your child's age and two current proofs of address to the registration appointment; immunizations must be reported to Halton Region Public Health. The Halton Catholic District School Board has its own Register Your Child page.

• Get a free Milton Public Library card, online or in person; it is free if you live, work or go to school in Milton. Adults and teens no longer need ID to register, but showing ID with your name and address gives full membership.

• Create a Town of Milton recreation account to register for programs, pre-register for drop-in activities and buy memberships. Add an adult first, then add family members on the My Info page.

• If you have a dog, license it with the Town; dog owners must license their dog every year. Apply online through DocuPet, which can renew automatically, or at the Community Services Desk at Town Hall, 150 Mary St.

• To ride Milton Transit, pay cash or buy tickets and passes in the Token Transit app. Children 0 to 12 ride free.

• Street parking is limited to five hours and banned from 2 to 6 a.m. unless posted. If you or visitors need to park longer or overnight, request a short-term parking exception; each licence plate gets up to 25 a year.

If you own

• Your property tax account (roll) number changes when you buy. If you pay through online banking, update the roll number from your tax bill, and consider a pre-authorized payment plan through the Town's property tax portal.

• Register on the Town's property tax portal to see your balance and bills, sign up for eBilling, update your mailing address and manage autopay. You need information from your 2026 Final Tax Bill to register.

If you rent

• Check that your tenancy uses Ontario's standard lease, required for most residential tenancy agreements signed on or after April 30, 2018, and see which utilities (electricity, heat, water) it makes you responsible for.

• If your lease makes you responsible for water, ask your landlord about the water and wastewater account: Halton Region lets property owners assign a third party, such as a tenant, to maintain it.
