The everyday rules

How long can I park on a Milton street?

Street parking throughout Milton is limited to five hours, and you cannot park on the street between 2 and 6 a.m. unless a sign says otherwise. To park longer or overnight you need a parking exception.

How do parking exceptions work?

You can request a short-term exception to park on the street for more than five hours or between 2 and 6 a.m. Each licence plate gets up to 25 a year. From 15 April to 14 November you can ask for extended exceptions beyond 25 if you have used or booked all 25 for every vehicle registered to your home, park at least one vehicle in your garage, and apply five business days before the start date.

The Town may suspend parking exceptions during winter storms; vehicles that get in the way of snow clearing may be ticketed or towed.

Can I buy overnight parking?

Under a one-year pilot, the Town sells monthly overnight parking permits in designated lots at municipal parks: 400 spaces across all four wards, $60 a month, first come, first served, and only for people with no outstanding parking violations. A review of the program goes to Council in 2027, and the pilot continues until then.

Can my street get longer parking permanently?

A homeowner can ask for permanent 15-hour parking on one side of a residential street. If the Town finds the street can support it, at least 51 per cent of homeowners on the street must sign a petition and then confirm it in a Town questionnaire before staff ask Council to amend the parking by-law. The process can take up to three months, and the other side of the street becomes no parking at all times.

Winter storms

Where can I park during a winter storm?

When a winter storm occurs, street parking exception permits are suspended and no cars may be parked on Milton roads; vehicles left on the road may be ticketed or towed at the owner's expense. During suspensions the Town keeps designated lots at parks in each ward open for parking for up to 48 hours, listed by ward on its winter parking page.

Do not shovel snow from your property onto the road or sidewalk; placing snow on the roadway breaks the Town's Road Fouling By-law.

Tickets

How do I pay or dispute a parking ticket?

Milton handles parking tickets through its Administrative Penalties System rather than provincial court. Pay online (with a $2.45 convenience fee) or in person at Town Hall, 150 Mary Street, by cash or debit. To dispute a ticket, request a screening review online; if you disagree with the screening officer, you can ask for a hearing review, whose decision is final. Pay or request a review within 30 days of the violation date to avoid extra fees.

If you do not respond by the deadline you lose the right to a review, and fees build up: $12 after 30 days, $36 after 60 days and $31 after 75 days.
