Snow clearing in Milton: roads, sidewalks, windrows

Which roads are plowed first, your sidewalk, the snow at the end of your driveway, and who to tell.

Summary

The Town plows major roads and transit routes first, then rural collector roads and industrial areas, then residential streets, and aims to finish all roads within 24 hours after a snowfall ends. Residents must clear the sidewalk attached to their property within 24 hours of the end of a storm. The Town does not clear windrows, except through its paid program for seniors and people with disabilities.

Roads

When will my street be plowed?

Milton plows by priority: first, major roads and transit routes, plowed to bare pavement; second, rural collector roads and industrial areas; third, urban and rural residential roads, serviced once the first two are done. When all streets need plowing, the Town aims to finish within 24 hours after the end of the snowfall. Heavy snowfalls or successive storms can take longer.

During a declared significant weather event, clearing can take longer than 24 hours. The Town's Plow Tracks map is in testing and may not reflect current operations.

When does the Town ban street parking for snow?

When a winter storm event is declared, the Town suspends parking exceptions so plows can clear the roads. As a guideline it treats a forecast of 10 cm or more of snow as the trigger, though lower amounts can trigger it when other conditions make clearing difficult.

Sidewalks and driveways

Who clears the sidewalk in front of my house?

You do. Residents must clear the sidewalk attached to their property within 24 hours of the end of a snow or ice storm. Once 5 cm or more has fallen, the Town plows the sidewalks and pathways associated with schools, transit routes and major pedestrian routes.

Do not push, blow or shovel snow onto the road. Clear it onto your property or the Town boulevard.

Will the Town clear the snow the plow leaves at the end of my driveway?

No. The pile left by the plow, the windrow, is the homeowner's responsibility. The Town's Windrow Removal Program clears it for residents who are 65 or older or have a disability, with no able-bodied person living at the address. It costs $71 and runs from 1 December to 31 March. Service starts when a snowfall exceeds 10 cm and only after the Town has plowed all roads; depending on the number of registrants, it is completed at least 36 hours after the roads are done.

Registration for 2026–2027 runs from Monday 19 October (8 a.m.) to Friday 23 October (4 p.m.) online, or in person at the Milton Leisure Centre from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on those days. The program does not clear windrows left by sidewalk plows or plow driveways.

Reporting a problem

A plow damaged my mailbox. Will the Town pay?

The Town reimburses up to $100 to repair or replace a mailbox damaged by a Town of Milton plow. Report it through the operations contact form by 30 May; the Town assesses the damage and tells you how to submit receipts.
