Kindergarten registration for September 2027 is open at both of Milton's school boards: who qualifies and what to bring

Who can start in September 2027

Both Halton school boards use the same age rule. A child can begin Junior Kindergarten (Year 1) in September 2027 if they will be four years old by December 31, 2027, and Senior Kindergarten (Year 2) if they will be five by that date. Both boards run a full-day program.

Each board says a child already in Year 1 at one of its schools does not need to register again for Year 2. The Catholic board says the school processes that placement unless told otherwise.

Catholic board (HCDSB)

The HCDSB announced on October 20, 2026 that registration for 2027-28 is open. Parents register through the board's online portal, PowerSchool, and can upload the required documents there or take them to the school by appointment. New users must create an account first.

• The child's birth certificate (required for Year 1 and Year 2).
• A Roman or Eastern Rite Catholic baptismal certificate for the student or a parent. The board says a child with none may still be admitted if one parent can provide one.
• Proof of address, such as a utility bill, a government statement, a property tax bill or a current agreement of purchase and sale.

For families new to a school, in-person proof of a parent or guardian's identification is mandatory. The school will contact the family to set a date and time with office staff. Families can find their home school with the board's school finder tool.

Public board (HDSB)

The HDSB's Registering for Kindergarten page says registration for 2027-28 is open. A family first registers the child for school through the board's registration page, then completes the Kindergarten parent questionnaire, which the page says can be done online or in person starting in January. The board also asks families to report a child's immunizations to Halton Region, online or by calling 311.

Families are encouraged to attend a Kindergarten orientation in the spring, which each school will announce, and the board's Welcome Centre registers Kindergarten students in certain cases where the family is new to Canada, such as a parent on a work permit registering a first child. The HDSB's September 29 release said registration for September 2027 would begin in October 2026, in person or through the online pre-registration form.
