The details

What Council approved

On June 22, 2026, Milton Council authorized staff to build a veterans' monument in Victoria Park and approved a new $40,000 capital project to pay for it, according to the meeting's minutes. The project is funded with a $15,500 contribution from the Milton Royal Canadian Legion Branch 135 and $24,500 from the Town's Project Variance Reserve.

Staff report COMS-007-26 says Legion representatives approached the Town with the proposal. The monument is meant to honour all Canadians who served and to pay tribute to Canadians who deployed on NATO and UN operations. Town staff met Legion representatives on site to choose a location that is visible within the park and does not block the view of the cenotaph.

What it will look like

According to the report, the monument will be granite, to complement the cenotaph, with a top tablet of red granite carved in the shape of a maple leaf on a base of black and grey granite. It will be about four feet high and four feet wide and etched on both sides, in English and French, with the inscription "Dedicated to Canada's Veterans and those who supported them". The base will carry the crests of the Canadian Army, the Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Canadian Air Force. An engineer will design and certify a concrete footing, and Town staff will coordinate construction.

How it is funded

The Legion won funding through Veterans Affairs Canada's Commemorative Partnership Program, which covers up to 50 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $15,500, and will pass that money to the Town. The report says the Legion also expects to contribute an additional amount from its annual poppy campaign, which is not yet confirmed; any such donation would reduce the draw on the Town reserve. Under the terms of the funding agreement, the project must be completed by March 31, 2027.
