Milton is updating its 2012 noise by-law, and the resident survey closes November 13
The Town of Milton is reviewing a noise by-law last updated in 2012 and is asking residents how loud their neighbourhoods are, what causes the noise and when it is worst. The online survey closes November 13, 2026.
What is happening
The Town of Milton is reviewing its Noise By-law, the rule that limits noise, and noisy activities, that can disturb residents at home and in their neighbourhoods. The by-law was last updated in 2012. The Town says Milton has grown significantly since then, with more homes, more residents and busier patterns of work and recreation, and it wants the updated by-law to reflect current community expectations while staying fair, reasonable and enforceable.
What the survey asks
Input is being collected through an online survey on Let's Talk Milton, open to all Milton residents until November 13, 2026. According to the Town, the survey's questions cover:
- How noisy residents find their neighbourhood overall.
- What most often causes noise disturbances in their area.
- The days and times when noise is most disruptive.
Participants are entered into a draw for a set of noise-cancelling headphones; the Town has posted contest rules on the project page.
What happens next
The survey results will be used to shape proposed updates to the by-law, which will go to Council for consideration. The current by-law includes a process for granting exemptions, which the Town says are common at some times of the year, and staff will look at how exemptions are considered so the process stays consistent and transparent. If Council approves an updated by-law it would then be enacted; the Town says implementation timelines have not yet been set.
